Project

Project code: 2812NA129, TI-OL-08-PID1547
Contract period: 06.08.2014 - 31.01.2019
Budget: 1,216,524 Euro
Purpose of research: Inventory & Assessment

Increasing resource efficiency by optimising crop and milk production on whole farm level under consideration of animal welfare quality aspects’ is a joint project of the Technical University Munich and the Thünen-Institute and is conducted in the network of pilot farms in Germany. Therein the work packages ‘The animal as driver for changes in farm organisation’ and ‘Economic assessment of resource efficiency on farms’ are located in the Thünen-Institute of Organic Farming and in the Thünen-Institute for Farm Economics. In the first working package on 40 organic and conventional German farms changes in resource efficiency in milk production by improving management and animal welfare in dairy farms are analysed. Here animal health and animal welfare and the use of veterinary medicinal products are assessed as important aspects of sustainability of livestock production. This information shall be linked to environmental and efficiency criteria of production. Further, in the second working package the economic performance of strategies to improve resource efficiency in milk and plant production are derived from farm data of the network of pilot farms. Recommendations on suitable political support strategies to improve resource efficiency are deduced from expert interviews and from meta-evaluations of current support strategies. For this, adequate economic data are defined and collected. Economic consequences of changes in production are evaluated by modelling and are related to other indicators of resource efficiency. Based on the results of all working packages of the joint project farmers, scientists and farm advisors will jointly develop farm individual scenarios for optimization of animal welfare and resource efficiency. A participatory elaboration of development scenarios and an assessment of synergistic effects or trade-offs between animal welfare quality and health demands, economics and environmental parameters are done. With the combination of management and animal welfare data with environmental and economic effects calculated on a whole farm level and the analysis of their interactions the project enters new scientific territory.
