Project code: 2814EPS015
Contract period: 01.10.2014 - 31.12.2019
Budget: 227,986 Euro
Purpose of research: Demonstration

Directed by the State Research Centre of Agriculture and Fishery Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, several partners participate in the nationwide joint research project, including the agricultural state institutions of the five federal states in Northern Germany (LLFG ST, LWK NRW, LWK NS, LELF BB), the LMS Agrarberatung GmbH, additional expertise facilities and private farms. The goal of the project 'Exemplary demonstration network for cultivation and utilization of lupines', as an element of the federal ministry's protein crop strategy, is to support the expansion of lupine cultivation and utilization. By building a nationwide lupine network, knowledge transfer regarding the cultivation and utilization of lupine crops starting with research and including practice, along relevant value creation chains, shall be facilitated. From seed allocation to cultivation and utilization, exemplarily selected value creation chains for lupines, based on scientific findings as well as on sound practical experience and guidelines from farming policy, will be shown. Best-practice-demonstrations regarding the seed production, cultivation, processing and utilization of lupines , in conventional and organic livestock breeding (dairy cows, laying hens, pig) as well as in the product refinement for human nutrition take centre stage at the Lupine -network. There are two categories of demonstration farms in the northern states (MV, BB, ST, NI, NW). “Best-Practice-Farms” demonstrate the cultivation of lupines according to different production-related concerns. Various scenarios regarding production techniques will be presented on demonstration fields. Ways of processing lupines according to the findings of current research along the before mentioned value creation chains will also be shown. So-called Data-logging farms (approx. 30) provide field-related data on lupines and related crops or follow -up crops as well as additional production-related and economic data from practice. The anonymized statistical values are evaluated by project partners after being consolidated in a central database. The analyzed data shall provide information about economic viability, preceding crop effect and the entire ecosystem activity of lupine cultivation. The provision of a wide range of data from cultivation practice makes a sound evaluation of the cultivation risk possible. The selection of these farms is carried out through a public announcement and a selection process. An additional element of the lupine network is knowledge acquisition and knowledge transfer between research, consultancy and practice. Longstanding research activities on the topic of lupines, so-called centers of competence located in various states shall be connected. Among these are research facilities, institutions and companies, which combine a know-how regarding the cultivation and utilization of lupines that will contribute to a demonstration network of excellence. Current research topics of the different competence facilities will be included in demonstration and consultancy. Besides knowledge acquisition by the competence facilities, knowledge gain will result from planned R&D projects. Knowledge and newly gained insight about lupine cultivation and utilization shall be made accessible to an interested audience and public in the context of farm days, seminars, lectures and symposia. Guidelines for the entire value creation chain are to follow The lupine network shall be complied as a communication platform for farms and trade companies as well as for processing facilities, cultivation farms, research- and information -centers. In the scope of this project, the establishment of an internet portal supporting the project is planned. The online lupine forum shall offer extensive information to selected and interested audiences about activities and results from knowledge evaluation and from demonstration farms, in order to connect farmers, facilities and companies to the network. This will increase public awareness of the lupine network and at the same time secure quantity and quality in value creation chains in the long run. In its complexity the project supports and strengthens value creation chains through site-specific and economically valid suggestions from cultivation, research and consultancy facilities and points out ways of utilization. Contacts to future partners at different network layers and initiatives around the topic lupines will be established at the same time. The lupine network shall be maintained and kept up beyond project time, in order to establish a sustainable cultivation and utilization of lupines in Germany, economically sound and open to development.
