Production processes

Project code: vTI-FG-08-43
Contract period: 01.07.2007 - 31.12.2010
Purpose of research: Applied research

During the last 20 years, experiments of Russian and Chinese scientists showed promising results in the generation of triploid poplar plants with high performance. Own research reports on larch, established in the past, confirmed the possibility to manipulate the pollen development. Investigations on the formation of diploid pollen as well as treatments of female flowers and the immature seeds will show if a drive of gamete formation (2N) is possible respectively the selection of triploid tissues aimed at the regeneration of plants. Methods for the creation of fast growing triploid aspen and poplar plants are directed towards the intensification of breeding research (smart breeding), including investigations on traits (markers) for their selection within progenies. The evaluation of the plant material regarding the expected conformity, performance, resistance and restricted fertility will be carried out with respect to its use for biomass production under changing climatic conditions.
