Purpose of research: Applied research

While the global cultivation of GM soybean is constantly expanding, the demand for products from non-genetically modified soybean in Germany and Europe is increasing. The expansion and improvement of soybean production in southern Germany could aid in safeguarding domestic protein supply, in particular for organic animal husbandry, a prerequisite being the availability of locally adapted soybean cultivars with high, stable yields and high protein content. The aim of this project is to establish and expand national soybean breeding with the objective of developing locally adapted soybean genotypes, applying optimized methods for breeding and selection of genotypes using phenotypic and molecular genetic breeding methods. This project is based on the establishment of breeding material from the early to the very early gene pool of the maturity groups '0' to '000'. Unselected soybean lines from North America and Canada and breeding material from Germany, Austria and Switzerland will be used as source material. The close genetic base in this source material will be phenotypically and molecularly analyzed and extended in a second step by cross-breeding with varieties and landraces from Asia. Furthermore, the genetic diversity of these soybean lines will be investigated and compared with selected reference lines regarding genetic structure and breeding-related candidate genes. The results will be incorporated in the hybridization plans and in an association study.
