Collaborative project: Reduction of multidrug resistant bacteria during milk production: Use of antimicrobial peptides to reduce bacterial pathogens in biofilms and develop a rapid detection system for bacteria, Subproject 1

Project

Project code: 2817700414
Contract period: 01.08.2015 - 31.01.2018
Budget: 118,188 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research

Mastitis, in particular those caused by antibiotic-resistant bacteria, are of great health economic relevance for milk production. Bacterial biofilms in the teat canal as well as in the teat cup represent a particular challenge. The aim of RemuNa was therefore to reduce bacterial counts in biofilms developing novel disinfection methods using innovative methods of bacterial identification and quantification. For this purpose, current bacterial isolates were classified by mass spectrometry and quantified by various measuring methods (MALDI-TOF-MS, thermal biofilm measurement) to determine the influence of antimicrobial peptides on complex biofilms. The trusting cooperation between the partners (bovicare GmbH, RIPAC-LABOR, ILBC GmbH, Fraunhofer IZI-BB, IMTEK, IMT) enabled the successful development of a setup for thermal biofilm measurement under flow conditions, which would not have been possible without the microbiological and physicochemical expertise of each of the individual partners.
