Collaborative project: Combined measures in animal housing and feeding to reduce the spread of pathogens, the development of resistance and transfer of antibiotic resistant bacteria in broiler and turkey production (OPTILITT), Subproject 1

Project

Project code: 2817701814
Contract period: 01.08.2015 - 31.07.2018
Budget: 202,908 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research

In the experiments with fattening poultry environmental factors are varied in order to test their influences in different experimental trials: a. Variation of housing (? focused on differently intensive contact of the animals with their own excreta (mixture of litter and excreta) 1. Floor pens with litter (no extra litter material in the fattening period, and the litter quality will become poor) 2. Floor pens with litter (but with floor heating, which ensures a very dry litter) 3. Fully slatted floors (without an littered area) 4. Partially slatted floors (including an area that is littered) b. Variation of feeding (dietary effects) 1. Pelleted (commonly used) complete diet 2. Positive control feed (developed to optimize litter quality) 3. Negative control feed (due to diet composition: a challenge) c. Variation of water supply / watering technique 1. nipple drinkers (in broilers) 2. Bell drinkers in trials with turkeys 3. Simulation of water losses (with antibiotics) in the animal area (litter / scratching area) or in the manure (underneath animals) in turkeys.
