Project

Project code: 2817702414
Contract period: 15.08.2015 - 14.08.2018
Budget: 236,098 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research

Bovine mastitis is an important cause of culling and antibiotic therapy in modern high-yielding dairy herds. The aim of the study is to develop and to implement an evidence-based therapy and consultancy concept to reduce the use of antibiotics and to minimize antibiotic resistance in dairy farming. The project consists of two stages. First, diagnostic systems that enable the rapid identification of udder pathogenic microorganisms and groups of microorganism will be developed and implemented as well as established in dairy farms and associated veterinary practices. This concept provides the basis for an evidence-based mastitis therapy. Second, an advisory approach will be developed and implemented, which will enable veterinarians and advisers to accompany the progress of animal and udder health on a farm comprehensively. Data about current resistances on the farm will be considered, too. During the course of the study effects of the newly developed, holistic concept of diagnostics on resistance patterns of mastitis pathogens in the enrolled dairy herds will be determined.
