Assessment of secondary raw material and wastes (for instance from potato processing) addressing risks for plant health

Project

Project code: JKI-AG-08-0013
Contract period: 01.01.2008 - 31.12.2021
Purpose of research: Applied research

Secondary raw material like compost and fermentation waste from biogas production are produced on a large scale from plant products. It has to be found out whether these or comparable fertilizers from secondary raw material support spreading of resistant harmful organsims of plants and which measures have to be taken to prevent them from spreading. For this purpose relevant questions of topical interest are subject to literature studies and research co-operation with universities.
The aim was to find out whether the quarantine diseases Clavibacter michiganensis ssp. sepedonicus, Synchytrium endobioticum and Globodera rostochiensis are killed through aerobe composting or pasteurization. Only the nematodes were killed in these procedures. This project helps to assess plant health risks resulting from the use of secondary raw material as fertilizer and to provide advice to BMEL on legislation like for instance the Ordinance on Fertilizers, the Ordinance on Biowaste and the Ordinance on Sewage Sludge. The results are also used to elaborate international standards of the EPPO and to protect soils and crops from the undesired introduction of robust harmful organisms.
