Valuation of climate protection options in the forest sector
Project
Project code: TI-WF-08-PID475
Contract period: 01.03.2012
- 29.02.2016
Purpose of research: Inventory & Assessment
The forest sector (forestry including timber processing) contributes to carbon storage and emission reduction by the sequestration of carbon in forests, in harvested wood products as well as by substituting fossil fuel. This contribution can be further optimized, provided that knowledge about carbon cycles and climate efficiency of several of the options for climate protection in the sector can be extended. In order to reach national climate protection targets, different measures to improve the carbon footprint of the forest sector are defined. They include various options for action, for example changed rotation periods and increased use of wood for construction. The measures are analysed with respect to their climate impact and abatement costs.
We defined different measures for the German forest sector. These were analysed according to their climate impact and their abatement costs. For our analysis we develop physical as well as monetary input-output tables for the forest sector. At the enterprise level we use a forest simulator. Therefore, bottom-up and top-down approaches can be combined according to requirements.
