Harmonised Data and Services for the European Forest Data Centre
Project
Project code: TI-WO-08-PID1452
Contract period: 01.12.2012
- 31.12.2016
Purpose of research: Inventory & Assessment
eForest is a platform for projects between the Joint Research Centre (JRC) of the European Commission and the „European National Forest Inventory Network“ Consortium (ENFIN). eForest aims in supporting and enhancing the basic knowledge of the European Forest Data Centre (EFDAC)
The implementation of EFDAC supports data hamonisation, publishing of harmonised data, espacially for international commitment needs, i.e.:
- Ministerial Conference of theProtection of Forest in Europe(MCPFE)
- FAO Global Forest ResourcesAssessment (GFRA)
- UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD)
Within this Framework Contract further Special Contracts will be established. These Special Contracts (SC) focus on specific data needs defined by Joint research Centre of the European Commission.
The Thünen-Institute (TI-WO) act in several SC as data provider and/or partly as coordinator. These SCs focus on special tasks and approaches, i.e.:
SC3 to SC8 – feasibility studies to use NFI data to enhance european forest maps, develope maps of species distribution and to implement universal estimation procedures for European harmonised estimates for different regions and visualization of different indicators.
SC13 – TI-WO is coordinator the project, which aims to develop a harmonised definition of above ground biomass in Europe and to estimate the amount of biomass for different regions in the EU using data from the National Forest Inventories (NFI).
SC14 – TI-WO acts as a partner in this project to enhance the core software module of the European Forestry Dynamics Model (EFDM).
SC 17 “Use of National Forest Inventories data to estimate biomass in the European Forests” is a continuation to SC 13 for nine more countries.
