Assessment of the sustainability of different forest management and timber use scenarios, with emphasis on climate protection and biodiversity conservation (WEHAM-Szenarien)

Project

Project code: TI-WO-08-PID1369
Contract period: 01.10.2014 - 31.12.2016
Purpose of research: Inventory & Assessment

The potentials of forests and wood products for mitigation, adaptation of forests and forest-based industries to climate change and inclusion of biodiversity conservation targets in forest management are very important parts of forest and climate related policy and decision making. Various conflicts of interest exist, and assessments of current and future management options are needed. WEHAM simulates growth and management of forests and allows for comparisons of expected outcomes of different management scenarios. In this sub-project, different scenarios of forest management (based on stakeholder interviews) will be compiled and used in simulations with WEHAM. The results of the simulations will be analysed with regard to sustainability, climate protection and biodiversity indicators. WEHAM projects the growth of individual trees into the future. The growth equations used are derived from repeated measurements in the National Forest Inventory (NFI). Each tree tallied in the NFI can be included in the simulations. A single tree represents a certain number of trees of the same genus, age and size. According to a given management scenario. the trees are
