Collaborative project: System for poultry husbandry to reduce the risk of bacteria recontamination during the fattening period, to improve the animal health and to reduce the risk of crosscontamination into the human food chain for bacteria in general and especially for antibiotics-resistant bacteria - subproject 3
Project
Project code: 2817700314
Contract period: 15.05.2016
- 14.05.2019
Budget: 158,227 Euro
Purpose of research: Experimental development
"The aim of the project was the development of a new housing system to reduce the occurrence of (antibiotic-) resistant germs in broilers. A perforated area was installed in the supply area to separate the animals from their excrements and to reduce antibiotic treatments and resistance development. In addition to the perforated area, the animals had access to littered areas. The new housing system was evaluated with regard to animal health, animal welfare, microbial status of the litter, emissions, and production performance. Positive effects were shown with regard to foot pad and hock health as well as plumage cleanliness. In addition, the elevated level led to an increased structuring of the functional areas. There were no differences in the physical parameters of the litter. The NH3 emission rate of the new housing system was higher compared to conventional litter flooring. All in all, the new housing system increases animal welfare at the same production performance with a need for optimization in terms of NH3 generation."
