Collaborative project: Development of a SmartHarvest-System for less damaged sugar beets (SmartBeet) - subproject 2

Project

Project code: 2815706415
Contract period: 17.08.2016 - 16.08.2019
Budget: 256,325 Euro
Purpose of research: Experimental development

Sugar beet taproots can be severely injured through aggressive setting of the harvester’s cleaning turbines: beets may be ineligible for long-term storage. The driver can strongly influence the degree of injuries through turbine setting. In our SmartBeet project, we developed the base for driver assistance safeguarding low-damage beet harvest. Hot spots of mechanical strain were detected by electronic measuring bobs, cameras and structure-borne sound sensors. Further, taproot injuries and storage losses were correlated. Cameras were highly susceptible to failure while sound sensors delivered reliable signals. Root tip breakage indicated further types of injuries and potential storage losses sufficiently well. In addition to the turbines, several other harvester sections caused considerable amounts of injuries. Regarding turbines, only a low filling grade resulted to increased injuries. Filling grade and structure-borne sound have proven suitable for developing driver assistance systems.
