Collaborative project: Improvement of the sustainable use of oil radish (Raphanus sativus) as a greening crop by broadening its clubroot resistance – subproject 3

Project

Project code: 2818207615
Contract period: 01.09.2016 - 31.08.2019
Budget: 113,491 Euro
Purpose of research: Experimental development

The clubroot resistance of oil radish (Raphanus sativus) shall be increased to a level that allows including this greening plant also in crop rotations with oilseed rape or other Brassica crops. New resistance sources will be searched inside this genus by screening gene bank accessions and cultivars and studied for their race-specificity and genetics to conclude on their value for gene-pyramiding. Clubroot isolates that show virulence towards radish will be collected and it will be studied if initial observations of dissociated pathogenicity towards resistant radish or oilseed rape, respectively, can be confirmed. Intergeneric back cross progeny of (B. napus x R. sativus) hybrids will be used to transfer resistance also from B. napus to radish. These crosses will be supported by embryo rescue. Publicly available molecular markers will be studied for their applicability in a clubroot resistance breeding program in R. sativus. The breeding partner P.H. Petersen will be enabled to perform clubroot bioassays and to use marker assisted selection. 1. Screening of a vast assortment of Raphanus accessions for clubroot resistance. 2. Characterisation of the genetics and race-specific effect of promising Raphanus resistance sources. 3. Establishment of a Raphanus marker set and identification of molecular markers for clubroot resistance. 4. Introgression of clubroot resistance against Raphanus virulent isolates from B. napus. 5. Transfer of clubroot resistant plants to PH Petersen, establishment of the bioassay and embryo rescue methods and marker assisted selection at the breeding company.
