Laufzeit: 01.01.2009 - 31.12.2010
Forschungszweck: Grundlagenforschung

Nitrogen use efficiency of oilseed rape is rather low. One factor contributing to this inefficiency is a lack of temporal linkage between initiation of true-leaf senescence and the development of the reproductive organs. The advanced understanding of nitrogen remobilization and allocation mechanisms in oilseed rape and its close relative Arabidopsis during nitrogen starvation and developmental senescence is therefore critical for improvement of this crop. Towards this goal, we will follow two approaches: 1) A comparative transcriptome analysis at different stages of nitrogen deficiency-induced and developmental senescence is performed with Arabidopsis thaliana and Brassica napus leaves. The results will serve as a common platform for all members of the Research Unit. 2) A T-DNA insertion mutant analysis in Arabidopsis aims to unravel the role of peptide/nitrogen transport in nitrogen reallocation via peptide transporter PTR/NRT1 family proteins during nitrogen deficiency-induced and developmental senescence. Based on the results, we will develop strategies for barley and rapeseed plants to improve the source capacity for nitrogen export and sink strength for nitrogen import in leaves of transgenic plants.
