Förderkennzeichen: DFG FOR 995
Laufzeit: 01.01.2008 - 31.12.2010
Forschungszweck: Grundlagenforschung

Rice paddy soils are characterized by preservation of organic matter derived from the rice plant itself and from associated microbial consortia under at least periodically anaerobic conditions due to submergence. Lipids as molecular markers of rice and other crop plants (wheat) and as markers for microbial (archaeal, bacterial, fungal) input into paddy soil will be investigated employing a chronosequence (1000 years to 50 years), a reference site approach, laboratory cultivation experiment (performed by P5) and analyses of two prehistoric paddy sites. For cereal plant input, mainly long chain wax compounds shall be analysed in recent and historic soils by GC/MS-analysis and compound specific d13Cdetermination. In addition phospholipids of microbes and tetraether lipids of archaea and bacteria shall be analysed using GC/MS, GCirmMS and API-LC/MS (cooperation with P3). Establishment of specific rice paddy lipid markers in recent well-characterized natural systems and microcosm experiments (P5) will be transferred and applied to the study of biogeochemical processes in (pre)historic paddies. Accurate dating of rice paddy soil utilization and determination of turn-over of rice plant material will be achieved by supplying well-defined lipid fractions to P6 for 14C-AMS analysis. The detection of human influences on farmed soils will be corroborated by analysis of fecal coprosteroid compositions (cooperation with P3). Anthropogenic fire practise in paddy soil cultivation will be investigated by PAH analyses in co-operation with the Chinese Partner Institute in Nanjing.
