Project code: DFG SFB 670
Contract period: 01.01.2006 - 31.12.2010
Purpose of research: Basic research

Human hepatitis B virus (HBV) is a non-cytopathic virus establishing long-term persistent infection. Its replication is tightly controlled in an infected cell by cell-autonomous mechanisms, which mainly target the maturation of viral capsids. In the first part of the project, we will investigate how the cell prevents HBV capsid maturation, and how the viral X-protein helps to escape that control. Since our initial results indicate that in primary liver cell cultures recognition of the HBV envelope activates NFκB, but neither induces interferon expression nor prevents HBV infection, we will test the hypothesis that HBV envelope proteins activate pattern recognition receptors, and study why this recognition does not result in control of viral infection in the second part of the project.
