"The aim of MiteSens was a UAV-based monitoring system for spider mites in greenhouse cultivation that can detect and display early infestations of plant leaves with spider mites as well as monitor appropriate control measures.
During the project, test plants were infected with reared spider mites. More than 5000 hyperspectral leaf images were captured, processed using artificial intelligence and the probability of infestation with spider mites was classified into three classes. For the UAV-based monitoring, a UAV was built and equipped with a newly developed flight control, which continuously determines the current position and orientation of the UAV in space and enables it to fly around obstacles as well as allows the georeferencing of the recorded spectral image data. The final visualization of the infestation classes was realized in the ETRF89-referenced greenhouse floor plan in a 0.5 m grid."
