Environment and ressource management

Project code: DFG SPP 1090
Contract period: 01.01.2000 - 01.01.2006
Purpose of research: Basic research

Analytical pyrolysis (Pyrolysis-Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry) and Pyrolysis-Field Ionization Mass Spectrometry) enable qualitative investigations of the molecular building blocks of bound soil organic matter (SOM) and relative quantitative assessments of their proportions and thermal stability in samples of similar origin. One objective of the project is to improve the quantitative evaluations of the spectra. It will be tested how the quantification of important compound classes like lipids, N-containing compounds, carbohydrates and lignin building blocks can be achieved by internal calibration and correlation with results of complementary wet-chemical and spectroscopic investigations. These experiments will be carried out with whole soil samples and the mineral-bound proportions of SOM in particle-size fractions from selected treatments of the field experiments at Halle and Bad Lauchstädt. The overall aim is to find new evidence for the reasons of the stabilization of SOM fractions. The improved methods will be applied in cooperation with the other working groups of the Priority Programme.
