School fruit scheme in North-Rhine Westphalia: Examination of the effects on the nutritional behavior of the children, including parental consumption behavior and distribution frequency of fruit and vegetable products 2012-2014
Project
Project code: REFORDAT-172, II-A 1 F 41.2012.02
Contract period: 06.06.2012
- 31.05.2014
Budget: 93,344 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
First results show the success of the EU school fruit scheme in North-Rhine Westphalia. Since the beginning of the program in 2010 the number of participating pupils has increased to about 100.000. However, this project reaches only a minority of the overall 750.000 primary and special school pupils. In order to enable more schools to participate in the project within the given budget the idea of the state department is to reduce the allocation of fruits and vegetables from 5 to 3 days a week. This project aims to evaluate the impact of a fruit and vegetable distribution to 3 days a week, by analyzing the change in the fruit and vegetable consumption of the participating children. In addition, the effects caused by further reducing the fruit and vegetable distribution to 2 days a week will be investigated to evaluate whether this could provide an opportunity to include more schools without increasing the budget. Moreover the influence of parent’s fruit and vegetable intake and its impact on their children’s consumption patterns are analysed. The main objective of this research project is to analyse and evaluate the implementation of the school fruit scheme and derive relevant recommendations for the decision makers.
