The project aims at the determination of genetic fingerprints in the collections of the 'Deutsche Genbank Reben” (DGR) based on microsatellite markers. The data obtained are required for a sustainable management of grapevine genetic resources in Germany. By establishing vineyards for on-farm management the conservation of genetic resources should be organized with the viticultural practice. The generated information will be published in the form of a database on the Internet. The co-operation of the partners of the DGR is the common basis for the management of genetic resources of the vine. With the DNA fingerprinting data an environmentally neutral database will be established for the efficient preservation of the cultivated vine. The methodological and organizational principles for the project have been developed during recent years. In the ranges of the project leaf samples of the DGR material will be collected and the virus status recorded upon visual inspection. DNA from the leaves will be extracted. With the help of 25 markers genetic fingerprints will be generated and compared to reference cultivars. A detailed analysis of the data collected will help to identify duplicates, misnamed accessions, and for the investigation of relationships. Important accessions occurring only once can be duplicated as needed within the DGR. Intensive contacts with the winegrowers will be used to build up on-farm conservation of genetic resources. All data will be stored in a central database. Web-based search options will be programmed. The curators of the repositories of the DGR will become able to manage their own data set in the database in a password protected space. With the knowledge gained and published a crucial step for the efficient management of grapevine genetic resources will be created.
