Investigation of the impact of cultivation conditions on quality and safety of fruit and vegetables
Project
Project code: MRI-OG-08-1060-kultivierung
Contract period: 01.06.2020
- 31.12.2023
Purpose of research: Applied research
This permanent task aims to investigate the effects of cultivation conditions and cultivation methods on the quality and safety of fruits, vegetables and herbs. A focus is on new technologies, i.e. controlled environment cultivation and soilless cultivation systems (vertical/indoor farming, hydroponics, aeroponics) using artificial light (i.e. different light qualities and intensities generated by LED). These farming systems are emerging in Europe and are being used for crops such as lettuce and herbs, perspectively also for fruits (e.g. strawberries) and other special crops. The chemical and microbial safety of products from those systems thus needs to be assessed. In addition or concomitantly, selected research questions regarding products from conventional cultivation systems (outdoors, greenhouse) as well as conventional and organic production will also be addressed.
