Determination of resistance of spring and winter barley to Puccinia hordei in the frame of official tests for variety release
Project
Project code: JKI-RS-08-2319
Contract period: 01.01.2008
- 31.03.2020
Purpose of research: Applied research
Keywords: resistance breeding, barley, Puccinia hordei
Characterization of cultivars and candidates of winter and spring barley for resistance to Puccinia hordei; identification of qualitative resistance in seedling tests with defined isolates and of quantitative resistance by determination of the area under.
The annual examination of cultivars and breeding material for resistance to leaf rust carried out with 6 isolates of the fungus in the seedling stage revealed that most of the winter barley lines do not possess qualitative resistance genes. In spring barley, lines with complete resistance were found. In the field trials the Area Under the Disease Progress Curve was determined. This annual field tests provided information about the type of resistance (quantitative resistance, adult plant resistance). In spring barley lines, the level of resistance is higher than in winter barley lines. The annual results are given to the Federal Office of Plant Variety Release.
