Mapping of Grapevine Genetic Loci for Resistance to Downy Mildew and to Anthracnose (MGGL)
Project
Project code: JKI-ZR-08-5212
Contract period: 01.02.2018
- 31.12.2021
Purpose of research: Applied research
Fungal diseases are a serious thread for grapevine production causing heavy plant protection treatments to ensure yield and qualitatively acceptable fruits. To reduce this demand of plant protection resistance cultivars a required which carry multiple resistances. Thus, the proposed project focuses on starting a joined pre-breeding initiative by developing of markers for application in breeding programs both in Brazil and Germany for marker assisted selection of downy mildew (DM) and anthracnose (BS = black spot, Schwarzer Brenner) resistance. Both diseases are severe phytosanitary problems in Brazil. In Germany currently only DM is a serious thread while BS though present in Germany is not of a problem most likely due to heavy plant protection treatments against other fungi. However, facing climatic changes and following the precaution principle German breeders want to include resistance to anthracnose in their genepool and select for such loci without having outbreaks of the disease in their vineyards. The joined project takes advantage of considerable work on both sides ahead of the proposal and merges complementary activities and competences.
