The project pursues a new economically and ecologically optimized utilization concept for the biotechnological conversion of biogenic residues (bran) from food production into highly specific terpene-based bioinsecticides. To implement this project, a tailor-made whole-cell biocatalytic platform was constructed and researched. The active ingredient CBT-ol produced in this way is distinguished by its environmental compatibility, rapid biodegradability and reduced toxicity to humans and animals. As a raw material (wheat) bran was used, which is available in sufficient quantity, also for a large-scale application, in Bavaria. This allows a later scaling of the process to be developed in the industrial scale. The sustainable production of innovative bioinsecticides contributes significantly to a future agricultural practice that can meet the challenges of climate change and a steadily growing population. The methods to be developed in this project are in principle also applicable to other hemicellulosic waste streams from agriculture and food industry, such as e.g. vegetable, fruit and household waste. In addition, the development of a platform technology for the modular, biotechnological production of innovative, bio-based agrochemicals will strengthen the innovative power of the Bavarian SME, represented by the partner Provenion. The new technology platform for the production of cembranoid bioinsecticides from pentose-containing waste products of the food industry also leads to leap-forward innovations, with far-reaching implications for the labor market and securing the food base in Bavaria and around the world.
