Production processes

Project code: TI-HF-08-PID1621
Contract period: 01.01.2009 - 31.12.2013
Purpose of research: Applied research

The limited availability of fossil energy and raw material sources and their adverse impact on climatic changes require an increased use of renewable fuels and raw materials. In this respect, the berbion project represents a completely new approach: A biorefinery concept for urbanizations aiming at complete material and energetic utilization of arising residual waste. Finding suitable pretreating methods for biogenic resources (wood, grass, foliage) which enable increase of the revenues of subsequent bioconversion methods. Furthermore, possible concepts for utilization of industrial and commercial waste, incurring in Bergedorf, should be developed. Two pretreatment methods, steam refining and enzymatic hydrolysis, were tested on three different biogenic raw materials and their biogas potential was calculated. In most cases, the concepts for utilization of industrial and commercial waste were compiled on the basis of literature research.
