Coupling pyrolysis with mid-infrared spectroscopy for the parameterisation of soil carbon turnover models on a regional scale
Project
Project code: DFG FOR 1695
Contract period: 01.02.2012
- 31.01.2015
Purpose of research: Basic research
This subproject will develop new analytical methods to parameterise soil carbon dynamics sub-models at a regional scale and further contribute to the development of improved soil organic matter models with increased capabilities to account for pool heterogeneity, temperature response and calibration. The parameterised soil sub-models will, in conjunction with Expert-N and a coupled high-resolution atmosphere climate model, facilitate scenario modelling of soil carbon dynamics under changing climatic conditions at a regional scale. The specific objectives will be (1) coupling pyrolysis techniques with mid-infrared spectroscopy (MIRS) for simultaneous characterisation of different soil organic matter (SOM) pools concerning pool sizes and turnover characteristics; (2) measurement and subsequent modelling of changes in different SOM fractions in time at experimental sites in Kraichgau and Swabian Alb, as well as in long-term experiments; (3) redefinition of SOM pools in the multi-compartment model DAISY to facilitate direct calibration by MIRS-based techniques; (4) improvement of the capability of SOM turnover models to characterise the impact of climate change by including temperature functions for the turnover of distinct SOM and soil microbial biomass pools; (5) implementation of the Q-Soil model with continuous quality distributions of SOM as an alternative to the static quality of discrete pools as used by the DAISY SOM module in Expert-N; (6) performing regional SOM characterisation and model calibration.
