Pilot study on the use of commercially available AIV H5 vaccines
Project
Project code: 2813100506
Contract period: 01.08.2006
- 30.07.2008
Budget: 942,932 Euro
Purpose of research: Experimental development
At present, inactivated H5 whole virus vaccines are the only possibility to protect domestic poultry from H5N1 infections. Under experimental conditions with low numbers of (SPF) animals, these vaccines showed an acceptable efficacy against challenge infections. Field experiences (e.g. from Italy and Mexico), however, indicated considerable problems with application in large animal holdings. Reliable data, however, are missing. For an extensive evaluation of the efficacy of the available inactivated whole virus vaccines, we therefore plan to carry out a pilot study with ducks, geese and chickens from selected holdings. The project consists of the following parts: The pilot study is the basis for a further assessment of the vaccination with conventional inactivated AIV H5 and H7 vaccines. These results will be completed by investigations (serology and virology) in vaccinated zoo animals (different species, different time points after vaccination).
