Ecological and economic assessment of agroforestry systems in agricultural practice, sub-project 3, location Lower Saxony
Project
Project code: 22009807
Contract period: 01.09.2007
- 31.12.2011
Budget: 480,263 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
In the context of a national research cooperation, ecological and economic key data will be evaluated from two agroforestry systems in Lower Saxony. The established agroforestry systems combine the production of both, wood and crops on the same site and at the same time with environmental benefits as, for example, an increase in biodiversity. Therefore, the impact of the integration of hedgerows on habitat structure, floral and faunal diversity will be studied on experimental sites on arable as well as grass land. The yield and quality of crops cultivated between tree hedges as well as key data for an economic assessment will be evaluated and compared with results from cooperation projects in Thuringia and Brandenburg. A major aim is to give recommendations for the selection of tree species and crops and their spatial arrangement as a basis for an introduction of agroforestry systems into agricultural practice.
