Development of antimcrobial resistance by the oral apllication if antimicrobial agents such as Cephalosporines, Fluoroquinolones and Makrolides in pigs
Project
Project code: BVL-Abt. 3-08
Contract period: 01.10.2012
- 31.03.2015
Purpose of research: Inventory & Assessment
Applying antibiotics orally in animal groups is a questionable, though through veterinary perspective currently well-accepted unrenounceable form of pharmaceutical administration.
However, insufficient intake of active pharmaceutical ingredients and/or spreading of antibiotic residues within the feeding/trough facilities past therapy, may occasionally expose both diseased and healthy animals to subtherapeutical active ingredient concentrations. As a consequence thereof, the risk of insufficient efficacy increases, again based on resistance development. Administering antibiotics via feed is generally assessed more critically than administration via drinking water.
The question if oral medication of livestock represents a greater risk with regards to bacterial resistance development compared to other, e.g. parenteral, application forms is not yet finally assessed.
The project suggested/submitted aims to provide profound knowledge as to that concern.
Realisation of the project will be effected through four consecutive modules with external cooperation partners. The partners are involved in processing of the animal testing and the molecular biological tests.
