Collaborative project: Genetic reserves for wild celeriac species (Apium and Helosciadium) as component of a network of genetic reserves in Germany (Ge-Sell)
Project
Project code: 2814BM110
Contract period: 01.03.2015
- 30.11.2019
Budget: 656,445 Euro
Purpose of research: Demonstration
This Model and Demonstration (M&D) project investigates scientific, organizational, legal and political issues related to the establishment of a network of genetic reserves for wild celeriac species (Apium and Helosciadium) and provide answers. Problem solutions and products elaborated by the project can be transferred to other groups of crop wild relatives. The project will create an important base for an effective and efficient in situ conservation of plant genetic resources. It will contribute to the implementation of actions detailed in chapter 4.2.2.3 "Identification, establishment and expansion of genetic reserves" of the National Expert Program for Conservation and Sustainable Use of Plant Genetic Resources.
The project generates the scientific basis for the developement of in situ management strategies of genetic diversity of wild species relevant to pl ant breeding. Information on the distribution of genetic diversity within the Gem1an distribution area of four wild celery species are being used to establish genetic reserve network organisations as scheduled by chapter 4.2.2.3 of the German program for conservation and sustainable u se of pl ant genetic resources. The project a l so contributes to the implementation of the ECPGR concept for in situ conservation of crop wild relatives in Europe.
