Implications of climate change on the sustainability goals in the use of pesticides - Study on the efficiency and adequacy of the measures taken by the Federal Government for the achievement of environmental objectives for a sustainable use of plant protection products
Project
Project code: 371248405
Contract period: 01.03.2014
- 31.08.2016
Budget: 200,527 Euro
Purpose of research: Inventory & Assessment
Climate change might modify the frame conditions for pesticide use actually and in future. In this way current strategies for reducing pesticide usage (as formulated within the RL 2009/128/EC, the National Action Plan for sustainable use of pesticides and the objectives as formulated in the National Biodiversity Strategy for Germany) will be affected or counteracted. Not only changing climate conditions will influence plant protection strategies, mitigation and adaptation measures in agriculture result in land use modifications too.
Two key aspects are to consider: 1. changing plant protection demands as caused by changing land use and increasing infestation pressure, changing species composition in pests, diseases and weeds and 2. modifications in the ecological compensation potential within the landscapes contributing to the reduction of the negative effects of intensive pest control.
The project aims at the identification of potential conflictsbetween climate change adaptation and sustainable pest control. Moreover the targets of the national pesticide reduction programme should be critically reviewed and optional solutions for the conflicts will be derived. The project is structured in the following working packages: I: effects of climate change on plant protection demands, II. model-based assessment of direct climate effects on land management and pesticide use; III. identification of trade-off´s between future pesticide use and environmental strategies, IV. recommendations and problem solving strategies.
