Description
The University of Bamberg is both the newest and one of the oldest universities in Bavaria. When the Prince-Bishop of Bamberg, Melchior Otto Voit von Salzburg, expanded the Jesuit College, as it then was, to the Academia Ottoniana by adding faculties of philosophy and theology, the festschrift commemorating the occasion referred to the 'Domus Sapientiae' - the House of Wisdom. Prince-Bishop Friedrich Karl von Schönborn further extended the Academia to a full university by adding a faculty of law and, with the later addition of a faculty of medicine, it became a classic four-faculty university. Throughout its varied history the 'House of Wisdom', in the interim renamed Universitas Ottoniana Fridericiana, has remained true to its over 350-year-old traditions. Since its refoundation in 1979, the Otto-Friedrich University again carries the names of its two major patrons.
