Purpose of research: Applied research

Our study aims to identify the impact of early life dietary events among infants born at term and preterm on gut microbiome community structures and the subsequent association with health outcomes – specifically allergy and obesity. We will use prospectively collected data for ~1000 infants with multiple biological sampling points to enable longitudinal characterization of microbial communities using 16S amplicon sequencing of all faecal samples. Findings of this work will contribute to evidence based infant nutrition guidance, allergy and Asthma prevention and possibly prevention of obesity. The recruitment of the PAPS cohort has been finalized, the recruitment of the other cohorts in Canada and the Netherlands is ongoing. In PAPS, stool samples and blood samples have been collected and stored. Questionnaire data on diet, lifestyle and exposure variables and signs of atopy and asthma and physical examination has been performed and data entry has been finalized. In the project we plan: the genetic analyses (16S rRNA sequencing), measurement of allergic sensitization and inflammatory markers (LBP) in serum or plasma., data entry of lab results, data cleaning and multivariate statistical analyses and publication of findings.
