Comparative review of animal welfare in slaughterhouses based on legal requirements and professional guiding parameters
Project
Project code: 13-24
Contract period: 01.10.2013
- 31.03.2015
Purpose of research: Applied research
The protection of animals in slaughterhouses is verified on many individual criteria. They include structural conditions, quality of equipment, and the handling of the animals by the personnel. In addition, findings must be collected on the animals themselves and their behavior have to be observed. The effectiveness of the stunning of slaughter animals is checked by testing the animals to at least two points in time on various reflexes or reactions on pain as well as other criteria. The project will show whether the use of these many individual criteria could be sufficiently limited to a few key parameters. Parallel to the existing methods these new key parameters will be assessed on the same number of animals in larger Bavarian slaughterhouses. With equivalent correlation, the new methodology could lead to a rapid assessment of the welfare status and thus used for the risk assessment of a company. Having a high significance it will then enable a reduction in the amount of work, and if applicable, the official veterinary staff.
