Interdisciplinary Research Network (MedVet-Staph) IP3 - MRSA in the food chain: Source attribution and transmission modelling based on molecularcharacterization of isolates from the food chain and from humans
Project
Project code: BfR-BIOS-08-1334-208
Contract period: 01.11.2010
- 31.10.2013
Purpose of research: Applied research
Investigating the interaction of human and animal reservoirs of MRSA is crucial for several reasons:1. The transmission of MRSA from animals to humans might facilitate the development of additional MRSA-associated illness in the community.2. MRSA from the animal reservoir might be imported into hospitals, spread within the healthcare setting and add to the burden of nosocomial MRSA infections in humans.3. MRSA contamination of meat and other food items might lead to the development offoodborne diseases.4. Human-to-animal transmission may introduce MRSA into livestock population.5. The dissemination of MRSA between different animal species on farms or in veterinary hospitals may further increase MRSA infection rates among animals.Consequently, it is warranted to develop strategies for preventing the further spread of MRSA in animal herds, and infections due to MRSA in animals. Moreover, it has to be evaluated how transmissions from animals to humans, or reciprocally, can be prevented and how the entrance of MRSA from animal reservoirs in human healthcare settings can be controlled. These questions will be addressed in an interdisciplinary approach. BfR will characterize isolates from different stages of the food chain including molecular typing, phenotypic susceptibility testing, screening for virulence and resistance associated genes.
