Study of the cell death mechanism and cell-cell contacts in Caco-2 cells due to silver silver nanoparticles incubation

Nowadays, nanoparticles are used in broad variety of products, like food-relevant products. Therefore, the oral uptake of nanoparticles is of relevance. In previous studies, we could show that surfactant-coated silver nanoparticles are cytotoxic for Caco-2 cells but do not induce apoptosis. Transcriptomic and microscopic observations suggest a necrotic cell death mechanism. Additionally, previous results show an influence of treatment on cell-cell contacts. Necrosis of intestinal cells could lead to inflammation in the intestine and can therefore impact the intestinal barrier. In this project, the cell death mechanism and the cell- cell contacts of differently coated silver nanoparticles and silver ions in the intestinal cell model Caco-2 will be investigated.
