Okadaic acid is produced by dinoflagellates and can accumulate in different shellfish species. Consumption of okadaic acid can induce diarrhoea, nausea and vomiting. Besides these acute toxic effects also carcinogenic and embryotoxic effects of okadaic acid have been shown. Biotransformation of okadaic acid leads probably to toxification in contrast to detoxification of many other substances. This was shown in respect to the genotoxicity of okadaic acid by using a rat liver S9 mix. In this context other toxicological endpoints are not analyzed so far. However, the transferability from many rodent studies to humans is difficult since they differ in their P450 enzyme expression.
