Biocontrol of Ralstonia solanacearum causing potato brown rot in organic farms in Egypt
Project
Project code: JKI-EP-08-1117
Contract period: 01.01.2010
- 30.09.2016
Purpose of research: Applied research
The organically and biodynamically managed farms in Egypt that use agricultural compost as the main source for fertilization have faced increasing problems with the bacterial plant pathogen Ralstonia solanacearum over the last years. The soil-borne pathogen is genetically highly diverse and in particular isolates causing potato brown rot (biovar 2/race 3) that are handled as quarantine organisms in Europe are a major threat to potato cropping in Egypt and exports from there. The dissemination of R.s. can result from infested field soil, contaminated irrigation water and contaminated seed potatoes. Under environmental conditions R.s. was shown to enter the viable but non-cultivable state. Therefore this project aims to investigate the occurrence and diversity of R.s. in soils and irrigation water by means of molecular techniques. However, the main focus will be testing of in vitro antagonists under greenhouse and field conditions for their rhizocompetence, biocontrol activity and the response of the plant in different soils. The aim of the project is to develop biocontrol strains that under field conditions confer a reliable protection against the entry of R.s. into potato plants.
