Host-pathogen-interaction in E.coli resistance in chickens and its application to breeding prgrammes (E.coli-Chick)
Project
Project code: FLI-ING-08-62
Contract period: 01.05.2005
- 30.04.2007
Purpose of research: Basic research
Mortality due to infection with avian pathogenic E.coli (APEC) is a major reason for losses in poultry production. This FUGATO project aims to deepen our insight into defence mechanisms involved in APEC and its molecular basis as an essential prerequisite to improve genetic predisposition of disease resistance by marker assisted selection in animal breeding. Chicken lines of different genetic origin were tested for their resistance to E.coli infection. Lines differing in resistance are analyzed in detailed functional studies by several partners. At the same time, molecular markers for the selection of resistant chickens are searched by candidate gene approach.
