Investigation of relevant factors for modelling the durability and service life of wood in construction use by field tests and monitoring in service
Project
Project code: vTI-HTB-08-4.5
Contract period: 01.04.2000
- 31.12.2007
Purpose of research: Basic research
The objective of this research activity is to quantify the biological deterioration of wood by its determining decay factors in order to be able to predict the service life of wooden structures outside ground contact and to make service life calculable by a mathematical model. For this the bio-deterioration of wood is investigated by dose-response relations. The analysis of the various indirect and direct decay factors is done by data logging and evaluation of weather data, wood moisture content, wood temperature and progress of decay at experimental set ups in different climatic regions. Calibration of the model is achieved by correlation with real structures in service. For the latter, a system of data logging units is installed at the wooden bridge over the Main-Donau-Channel in the city of Essing. Data will be collected for at least three years. In the evaluation, the recorded data (dose) will be correlated with the occurred deterioration by fungi (response). Finally the vast variety of decay factors will be restricted to those which are necessary for mathematical modelling in order to predict the service life of wooden structures and their components.
