Monitoring the occurrence of soil-borne viruses in wheat, triticale and rye in the most important cereal growing areas of Germany
Project
Project code: JKI-EP-08-2290
Contract period: 01.01.2016
- 31.03.2018
Purpose of research: Applied research
The aim of the project and the expected results is the documentation of the occurrence of soil-borne viruses in winter wheat, triticale and rye in the most important cereal growing areas in Germany. The virus vector Polymyxa graminis forms resting spores which survive a few decenniums in the soil and are a continuous danger for development of new infested regions. The dispersion of the resting spores is carried out by soil erosion, soil adhering agricultural machinery and plant material. The virus vector populations show different aggressiveness to several cereals. The successful breeding of new virus resistant varieties demands effective methods for testing the virus resistance. Therefore it is to clear in which growing areas which viruses are occurred and how aggressive there are for the different type of grain. This information we can obtain by monitoring the occurrence of soil-borne viruses only. For the registration of virus infested regions numerous plant and soil samples have to be collected and to analyze. For this reason the Institute for Epidemiology and Pathogen Diagnostics of the Julius-Kühne-Institute organizes in cooperation with the official plant protection service of the federal state of Germany the monitoring to the occurrence of soil-borne viruses.
