Purpose of research: Basic research
The relevance of aggregation processes as a material function for sinks or sources for CO2 will be investigated on specific soils of the DFG-Special Research Program (SRP) 1090 with the above title. The purpose of the investigations is to quantify the immobilisation and mobilisation as well as the distribution of organic substances under defined physical boundary conditions (hydrological, mechanical). The main focus will be the dimension of structure formation in space and time.
Specifically, the effect of hydraulic and mechanical processes and their interaction for the sequestration of organic substance in the soil will be analysed. In this respect tensile stress and shear stress measurements will be carried out. Furthermore, the pore size distribution and its function will be determined as well as the aeration and the potential mineralisation of the organic substance at different scales of the bulk soil and the aggregate. The question of accessibility of specific pore spaces will be discussed by percolation experiments and the analysis of the spatial distribution of organic substances. In close cooperation and in combination with the results of the working groups of the SRP - Grootes, Guggenberger and Bachmann - more detailed information about physically based boundary conditions determining the stability of structure as a basis for the function of sink and source for CO2 in soils is expected.
