NOVALIS – environment-friendly production of energy wood in agriculture
Project
Project code: 23892
Contract period: 01.09.2006
- 31.08.2009
Budget: 398,000 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
The project NOVALIS addresses the chances and risks of an environmental-friendly energy wood production. Six partner organisations are working together in this co-operative project that is coordinated by the Forest Ecosystem Research Centre at Göttingen University. The activities are aimed at recording different stages of energy wood plantations and at evaluating of the their environmental compatibility. Together with the University of Applied Science Eberswalde the Institute of Forest Ecology and Forest Assessment caries out the sub-project 'Biodiversity' in order to derive indicators for environmental impact on stand and landscape level. This includes studies of the species pools in energy wood plantation and under different land-use conditions (arable land, fallow land, forest), assessments of the changes in species composition and of the influence of spatial scales on the diversity. Hints for the evaluation of habitats and sites in respect to energy wood plantations shall be derived.
