Development of a national evaluation program of plant genetic resources of cereal crops (EVA II)
Project
Project code: JKI-RS-08-2367
Contract period: 01.01.2008
- 31.12.2020
Purpose of research: Applied research
Keywords: plant genetic resources, cereals, resistance breeding
The project has been conducted since 2001 by BAZ, BLE, GFP and numerous breeding companies. It contributes to establishment of durable structures for the evaluation of plant genetic resources in breeding and research. By that means the efficiency of German evaluation activities will be increased and the durable exploitation of plant genetic ressources in breeding and research will be guaranteed. Based on the establishment of a cooperative network for the evaluation of plant genetic resources of main cereal crops, i.e., wheat and barley, a multilocal evaluation systeme will be established. To some extent molecular markers will be integrated in the evaluation of genetic resources. The generated evaluation data are transferred to the national system of documentation for plant genetic resources and are accessible for all participants and later on to the public.
Until now altogether 16 sets (8 wheat and 8 barley) corresponding to 1338 genotypes were provided. The sets consisted of 27.6 % foreign varieties, 23.1 % genebank mateial, 18.3 % material from BAZ, 9.2 % material from breeders, 17.3 % standards and 4.4 % differential sortiment for pathogens. These sets were evaluated at 41 locations., winter wheat at 27, spring wheat at 7, winter barley at 20 and spring barley at 18 locations. In the frame of this project altogether 15 diseases and 2 no parasite related symptoms were scored, i.e. 10 on winter wheat, 8 in winter barley, 9 in spring barley and 7 in spring wheat. By the application of molecular markers 5 resistance genes against brown rust and known resistance genes aginst the soilborne yellow mosaic viruses of barley (BaMMV/BaYMV) and the barley yellow dwarf virus were detected.
