The EMIDA ERA-NET consortium MYCOBACTDIAGNOSIS is formed by researchers from 11 scientific institutes in UK, Ireland, The Netherlands, France, Italy, Spain, the Czech Republic and Germany. The overall aim of the project is to improve the diagnosis of bovine tuberculosis and Johne´s disease (paratuberculosis) by generating generic and specific tools not compromised in sensitivity by co-infection or testing regimes.
The objective of the studies of the FLI within this consortium is the identification of host-derived biomarkers of latent MAP infection. A recently established experimental animal model of subclinical paratuberculosis will be exploited. It will be clarified if immuno-modulatory cytokines and regulatory eicosanoid related substances are suitable as biomarkers for morphologically defined early phases of Johne´s disease.
The model will be a platform for validation of protein and lipid antigens of MAP already identified through basic research by other partners in different read-out systems: IGRA whole blood assays, `tuberculin´-type skin testing, serology.
The outcome of the project will be improved tests for latent paratuberculosis which can be exploited world-wide by diagnostic laboratories.
