Protecting national economic crops via application of beneficial microorganisms to bio-control plant and human pathogens in organic agriculture (BioGuard)
Project
Project code: JKI-EP-08-2216
Contract period: 01.06.2014
- 30.09.2016
Purpose of research: Applied research
- Detection of location, abundance and diversity of bacterial and fungal soil-borne pathogens, phyllosphere-human pathogens in Egyptian field soils;
- Development of bio-control products on the basis of anagonists as well as bacteriophages to develop biocontrol strategies, which can be integrated in plant protection systems for desert agriculture.
The project aim is to increase sustainability and competitiveness in organic farms of agro ecosystems in Egypt reducing the global impact of agriculture emissions in a wide range. This goal will be achieved through new technology of new cropping systems/technologies. Proposed systems will be tested in the general framework of new information and safe guarding consumers' health also by decreasing the environmental impact of pest management practices by providing updated knowledge on the population dynamic as affected by new cropping systems and expected climate changes. The development of these new production technologies will be followed by setting monitoring systems, by identifying medicinal plants and their introduction in organic vegetables production systems. The value of produced products as natural green pesticides (i.e. bionematicides) will be evaluated under green house field conditions.
