WWF/Biopark – Agriculture for biodiversity – Development and implementation of a nature conservation standard for organic farms for enhancing biodiversity on farm level
Project
Project code: ZALF-693
Contract period: 01.09.2011
- 31.10.2015
Purpose of research: Basic research
In cooperation with WWF Germany, the organic association Biopark, and a
retailer a new nature conservation standard will be developed and a
certification system ‘organic + biodiversity’ will be implemented. The
goal is to enhance biodiversity on farm level and achieve a higher
value-added component for organic farmers. A catalog of more than 80
nature conservation measures for arable land, grassland and landscape
structures will form the basis for the certification in combination with
an evaluation system which has been developed with experts in the
fields of nature conservation and agriculture. Consumers will be
exposed to more information about the positive effects on biodiversity
by buying these products. Conservation advisory services and monitoring
for scientific evaluation of selected measures will be developed to
support the farmers in reaching the nature conservation standard. A
pilot region has been chosen with approximately 280 Biopark farms and a
total area of ca. 68,000 ha in Mecklenburg Western-Pomerania, north-east
Germany. An extension of this concept to other states and farming
associations is planned.
