Purpose of research: Applied research
The objective of this interdisciplinary project is to analyse different aspects of dairy production in a science-based way and by the same time closed to practice, in order to develop sustainable proposals for development of dairy production in Lower Saxony.
The project addresses the following questions regarding 'pasture versus stable', in cooperation between research and practice:
1. Effects on animal health, behaviour and well-being
2. Effects on digestion
3. Strategies for optimizing pasture systems
4. Requirements for environment and climate friendly, resource-efficient dairy production
5. farm economic evaluation
6. Consumers preferences and acceptance
Focus of the contribution of Thünen Institute is on topic 4. For this, the project module 7 on 'sustainability criteria for evaluating dairy production systems - nutrient and energy flows, carbon footprints and scope for improving resource efficiency' will be realised.
