Environmental effects of short rotation coppice (SRC) - recording, assessment and derivation of recommendations for a sustainable management (ERA-Net Bioenergy RATING-SRC), project: plant diversity
Project
Project code: TI-WO-08-PID1347
Contract period: 01.10.2008
- 29.02.2012
Purpose of research: Applied research
Short rotation coppice (SRC) stands can considerably contribute to secure bioenergy resources and thus to protect the climate. Less is known about the effects of SRC stands on the plant diversity of former arable land.
RATING-SRC (Reducing environmental impacts of Short Rotation Coppice (SRC) through evidence-based integrated decision support tools) was an international ERA-NET Bioenergy project dealing with the impact of willow and poplar SRC on the environment. The work of the Thünen Institute of Forest Ecosystens was dedicated to assess and evaluate the effects of SRC cultivation on the phytodiversity on stand and landscape scale.
On different SRC sites with willow and poplar species in Germany and Sweden we carried out relevés. Moreover other site parameter, light conditions and the composition of the soil seed bank were assessed. Based on the results and comparisons with the species pool of the landscape we could evaluate the contribution of the SRC sites to the species pool on landscape scale.
